Consumer Reports says Nexium (esomeprazole) is the first of its kind in the category of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Nexium is known as a proton pump inhibitor, and is prescribed by doctors to help prevent heartburn, heartburn and to treat persistent acid reflux.
This is the second time Nexium has been prescribed for GERD, according toThe Associated Press. That's because the drug also is used for heartburn, but not for GERD. Nexium is available as a prescription only drug and is available as a generic drug.
